Over the past several weeks, Cambodia has suffered significant flooding from monsoonal rains and the Mekong River swelling into Siem Reap’s Tonle Sap Lake and flooding parts of the town lining the river and surrounding provinces. Hundreds of thousands of acres of rice crops have been ruined as a result. The flooding is already causing a shortage of rice in the country, with prices of produce expected to increase and remain high until next year’s crop.
It has been estimated that over one million people in Cambodia have been affected with reports indicating that there have been more than 200 deaths, half of which are children. Over 32,000 people have been evacuated with approximately 70 per cent of the evacuees being women and children. Men are staying behind to take care of what is left of their property and livelihoods, and adding more difficulty for families already struggling to pay for food and provide shelter.
Our Cambodian NGO New Hope Cambodia is assisting with their Crisis Care Club by providing emergency food and accommodation. Your donations to help would be gratefully recieved via Nepcam Trust Aid Fund by bank transfer or cheques.
